Expectations

Expectations for this class:
  1. Attendance
    • Attending every class with a positive attitude and a passion for working hard, perhaps more academically than you are used to in other electives classes. 😉 I realize things come up, but it's very important that you come to every class to get your action project completed and to keep up with the learning in class.
  2. Volunteering
    • Completing 20 volunteer hours per term OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME, and 30 before May 1, in order to be eligible for the Winnipeg trip, but also because giving is essential to being an Agent of Change! Remember you MUST have these hours signed off on by your supervisor. Some possible ways to get your volunteer hours in are:
      • lunch hours, before school, or after school at Connect
        • running a club that has a teacher sponsor
        • working with Ms. Veteikis in the learning commons
        • helping out a teacher, administrator, or educational assistant (Ms. James or Ms. Riley, for example)
        • helping out in the main office (maybe Ms. Kangas has some tasks you can help with!)
      • after school or weekends at a variety of places such as:
      • in your neighbourhood
        • helping a neighbour (for free!) with a task like shovelling snow, or clearing leaves or...the sky's the limit!
  3. Journal
    • Your journal, which you will start next class, will be an essential record of your work in this class. I will keep it for you so it doesn't get lost, but your job will be to use it, and use it well, in class. For example:
      • brainstorming, designing, planning, and reflecting on your action project
      • taking notes during guest speakers
      • taking the time to carefully complete (small!) assignments such as reflections on activities, etc.
      • documenting your time and learning while we are in Winnipeg
  4. Social Action Project
    • A good amount of your class time will be spent planning and implementing a "social action project." This project, which will sit squarely in the middle of your "reuleaux," can take any form but you MUST be able to demonstrate that, through this project, you made an actual, demonstrable change of some kind. We will work together to develop and enact this project, but you are the architect AND the builder of this project!
      • As part of this, you will be required to present to EITHER the Connect Charter School Board, the Connect Charter Parent Council, or an alternate board in June. More on this in term 2.
  5. Winnipeg
    • As you know, an important learning opportunity for this class is the 4-day trip to Winnipeg in May, mostly to explore the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). This trip is going to be booked for May 19-22, 2020. The school covers the majority of the cost of this trip with each student required to pay around $400 (confirmed soon!), which is basically the cost of your flight to and from Winnipeg. More details on this soon, but you will need to take a form home in a few months that gets signed by your parents confirming your intent to join us on the trip. This way, we have confirmation of how many students are actually coming so we can plan accordingly, and not overbook flights or accommodation.
